False Dichotomies

I wanted to invest in some stocks. A stockbroker offered to sell me shares of mutual fund A or mutual fund B. He tried to keep me from learning more about the funds, but I found a way to research them anyway.

Both mutual funds had many companies that looked promising and that shared my values. But both funds also had junk bonds, penny stocks, and corporations that did not share my values (eg, defense contractors, tobacco, oil, large banks, big pharma, big agriculture, etc).

The stockbroker refused to sell me anything else. So I instead invested in worker cooperatives and corporations that served the public good.
