I call it "Spaceships or Alien Musical Instrument".

In a story I read, A, T, old incorporations of M hiding under N, and J (the corruption of L) were all treasonous.

It’s a blueprint for an alien or ultra-dimensional crystal, like DNA is to a human, except orders of magnitude more complex. The light comes in and diffracts down onto a host. The letters represent the notes that make the melody of that person. Everyone, or most people, have off-key variations as well. In some ways, it is like the Voyager Golden Record (or perhaps the time-independent response).

It’s also the map of the mind for unique meta-consciousness genesis.

They can evolve differently.

Two (or possibly more) can be reflected and represented within each other like a fractal reality that speaks to itself, twisting around up and down like a spiral staircase, sort of like the DNA double helix.

You always have the partner before and the partner next. You take the system from the partner before and evolve it for the partner next. From this perspective, the narrator is Partner 2. Here, Partner 3 now evolves a new pattern.
